IS5101: Masters Core Skills
This module is offered in 2017-18.
Aims
The aims of this module are:
- To reinforce language and communication skills required for MSc programmes.
- To introduce generic research skills to support coursework and dissertation.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, the student should:
- Understand the essentials of good technical writing.
- Be familiar with finding and analysing relevant literature.
- Be aware of the importance of formulating research questions and designing appropriate experiments to answer these questions.
- Have a working knowledge of data collection and analysis techniques.
Syllabus
- Language and communication skills: technical writing, critical analysis, bibliography and referencing, presentation skills, academic integrity.
- Generic research skills: framing research hypotheses, designing and conducting experiments, data collection techniques, data analysis and presentation, literature survey, professional and ethical issues.
