Aims

The aims of this module are:

  • To introduce modern network systems.
  • To identify and investigate management issues for network systems.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should:

  • Be aware of the different types of network systems that are common today.
  • Be familiar with management issues at each layer of the network stack.
  • Be able to apply their understanding of systems to concrete scenarios.
  • Understand technical management of network systems, with respect: to infrastructure planning, quality of service and security.
  • Understand social management of network systems with respect to: privacy, intellectual property and social media.

Syllabus

  • Modern network systems.
  • The architecture and structure of modern internet systems.
  • Network system measurement.
  • Network system management: network infrastructure planning; managing deployment of network resources.
