Project Types | CS Student Handbook

A variety of styles of individual project are possible, depending on your and your supervisor’s interests and expertise. See the links below for specialised guidance on particular project types. These indicate the elements that are likely to be required in a project of a particular type, and a recommended structure for your final report/dissertation.

software engineering
human-computer interaction
machine learning
theoretical computer science
research

These are not intended to be restrictive. If none is a good fit for your project, use the guidance for software engineering (this was the only type published before 2026-27). A hybrid approach is acceptable, so long as it is approved by your supervisor. It is also not a problem if your project starts out in one category and evolves into another.
